October- 20206 logisticstechoutlook.comLinda James Managing Editoreditor@logisticstechoutlook.comBefore the COVID-19 pandemic, organisations were focused on reducing the complexities and improving the efficiencies of the last-mile deliveries. However, in the last few months, the scenario changed considerably. Organisations have been forced to re-think their delivery strategies and shift their focus to the new world of contactless deliveries. In fact, the stakes have raised relatively high for the increased adoption of automated guided vehicles (AVGs) or drones for last-mile deliveries. Self-driving cars, trucks, sidewalk robots, and shuttles have been rolling out of the labs and parking garages and onto the streets to help deliver groceries, meals, and medical supplies. AVGs also enable shippers to provide rural or remote deliveries in reduced costs as costly local third-party delivery partners can be avoided.Alongside, drone-based delivery is expanding the last-mile delivery network beyond the standard expectations. An individual can now reach even the remotest of places without any hindrance and provide enhanced last-mile delivery service. Drones also prove to be a boon in scenarios that involve high-valued shipments or shipments bound by federal laws, which require document verification. Drones with high definition imaging capability can even help digitalise that bit of process and create a contactless delivery paradigm. Drones can scan the document through its high definition cameras and send it across to the drone pilot team who, based on the pre-set conditions, can validate the document and approve the delivery. This can improve both the customer experience with contactless delivery and even the efficiencies as image proof of the validated document is immediately referenced with this shipment in the back-end database.Despite the world moving toward realising the new era of fully contactless delivery with drones, there still remain many hurdles to cross. From payload and delivery range limitations of drones to legal regulations, advancements by aerial technology companies and governments need to move harmoniously to achieve this collective dream. In this edition of Logistics Tech Outlook, we bring you the story of some of the most successful contactless delivery solution providers that are leveraging innovative technologies to facilitate the best outcomes for their clients.
